Moving to the 8th hole you have a 399 yard par 4 with a long narrow green as your final destination. Its a 241 yard carry past the bunker on the right. since the yardage is a carry and your drives have been finding 250 to 260 yards, you feel safe with your driver. A gust of wind has other plans for you and you find yourself with a long bunker shot. With 160 yards to a narrow green from the bunker you decide to lay up. You find yourself lying two with only 45 yards to go. Time to go flag hunting. Smooth easy tempo and your three feet from the hole. Your still beating yourself up over hitting the bunker and end up with a two putt for not staying focused. Bogey!
The 11th hole is a 502 yard par 5. The trees on the right clear at approximately 219 yards out. You drive 255 yards to leave 247 yards to the hole. Nine iron to leave a short wedge shot to the green is not a bad idea for your second shot on a par 5. Not to mention it will take that bunker on the left out of play with an accurate short iron shot.
The signature 16th is a 530 yard par 5. A 247 yard drive leave you with 283 yards. Three metal off the fairway and you find yourself with an easy 70 yard wedge shot to the green to be on in three. Two putt and you’ve parred the final hole.
All through the course you will marvel at the splendor of the west face of the Santa Catalina Mountains, and the wonder of Pusch ridge. Though this is not like the mountain course of Starr pass and Arizona National, it is not the level courses of Randolph or Del Urich either. You find that the Conquistador course is a pleasant in between course with just enough elevation shots and hazards to make it a fun challenge for the day. You find that this is a course you’ll want to return to time and time again.
