Golfer Beware, Pusch Ridge El Con Quistador Golf Course Is No Push Over

Not to be confuses with the El Con Quistador or Canada Courses located a few miles away, Pusch Ridge El Con Quistador Golf Course may be a 9 hole course, but, don’t let it fool you. This is one tough course. It doesn’t get any easier the second round either. The fairways will mislead you, the greens are the biggest challenge, and trying to get even on the second nine holes for what happened on the first nine can easily slip into disaster. I can’t count how many times I have played this course. It hold challenge, frustration, and elation all in one course.

TUSHTHH_Hilton_Tucson_El_Conquistador_Golf_and_Tennis_Resort_home_rightKeeping a cool head while playing this course, rather than trying to beat it, will definitely lower your score. The first hole is a 383 yard Par 4 dog leg left. From the tee box you are shooting to a fairway that is a good 20 feet below you. This is a definite draw or straight lay up fairway. The dog leg is closer than it looks only 178 yards to over run it. If you hit the far right side of the fairway, the hill comes into play to reach the green, requiring a fade. If you make it to the left of the fairway, its a fairly straight shot to the green. Once on the green be careful not to putt to hard to the west. I’ve seen top fuel dragsters take off slower than a ball that ends up down the slope with a tough up hill chip to get back.

IMG_1388The second hole is 281 yard Par 4 with an easy to reach elevated green to lie two. This is probably the easiest hole on the course. If you’re going to birdie, this is the hole.

The third hole is the longest as a 514 yard par 5. The slope of the fairway can easily carry your ball into the houses below. A nice fade to the left of the fairway and let it dribble to the center is a dream shot. From the 150 yard market you are almost level with the green. Hit is short and its a chip up to the green. Too much adrenaline, and your hitting from the rough above the green. As easy as it may look, a Par or Boggie are both good scores on this hole.

IMG_1409The fourth hole is a 173 yard Par 3 with green challenges that combine the first and third greens. Short or to the right and its an up hill chip. Over shoot the green and your knocking it down to the green. Pars can be made on this hole as well as double boggies.

IMG_1412Next is the signature hole. The fifth hole is a 396 yard Par 4 with water on the front right at 306 yards. My favorite target is street side of the tree on the left of the fairway to take the water on the right out of play. Too far left and your ball will roll & roll That doesn’t mean that you’ll miss the water on the other side of the hole. If you hit the fairway to the right you have three choices. Perfect on the green, short and in the water, or long and in the water.

IMG_1389The sixth hole is 316 yard Par 4 with a dog leg right to an elevated green. This a good hole for the golfer who hits a draw. Slice it and you’ll hear car alarms go off. My favorite target is to the left of the trees at the dog leg. A shot of the tee between 175 to 200 yards is good for this hole. Come up short at 172 yards and there is a ditch on the left. Like the fourth green, hit short & an up hill chip, hit long and your knocking it down. Too far right, and good by ball.

IMG_1406The seventh Par 3 is fun to play. With only 76 yards to center, this hole can build or break your confidence. Too much macho and to the left, you’ll have the homeowner waiting for you at the green. There is no way to the eighth without passing his home. Watch for the bunker in the front if you come up short. Hit the trees in the back and it can ricochet back the the ravine.

IMG_1399The eighth is a 305 yard Par 4 with a blind green. Aim for the middle of the fairway, or for long hitters slightly to the right of center, and you will be ready to be on in two. If you can see the big tree to the left of the hole, aim to its right and you have a chance to be on in one. This is another good birdie hole.

Cross the road and follow the cart path to the ninth hole. A Par 3 with only 162 yards to go. Short and your in the rocky wash below the green. Let adrenaline kick in and your on the pitching green or putting green to the right. This is a makable green for most players. This green has some slope to it, but, its more forgiving than the ones before it. Now comes the choice, play these nine holes again, or take your licks and go to the hotel for drinks. Need a guide through the course, give me a call. I like playing this course.
