Starr Pass Golf Course of Tucson - One of My Favorite Mountain Courses

Picture 015One of my favorite mountain golf courses is Starr Pass. The Starr Pass legend began over 120 years ago when Richard Starr crafted a trail through the rugged wilderness of the Tucson Mountains. The golf course at Starr Pass was originally completed in 1986. Renovated by Arnold Palmer in 2004 Starr Pass is one of the premium courses in Tucson. Nestled in the Tucson Mountains with 27 holes this course has a challenge for everyone. Broken into three 9-hole courses; the Roadrunner up to 3241 yards, Rattler up to 3490 yards, and Coyote up to 3512 yards.  You will play a combination of two of these three courses to finish off 18 holes. Picture 021The par 4 Coyote 6 fairway marks the Starr Pass Trail and has earned the honor of being the signature hole at Starr Pass. As you hit your second shot you can imagine Richard Starr making his way through the trail this course is named after.

Picture 037This course welcomes every level of player. With five tees to choose from most holes, the challenges are evened out. You still have to be smart about your shots. Its a good idea to leave the driver at home. Scratch players hitting from the macho gold tees will find a need to put thought into every shot. The fairways are lined with Saguaro cacti. Some over 100 years old. When the Ocotillo are in bloom they are breath taking.

Picture 027Miss your target, and your ball could find itself in a Saguaro, bouncing of a roof, or nestled comfortably inside the coil of an unfriendly rattle snake. How bad do you want that four dollar ball anyway?

Picture 004The panoramic Tucson Mountain vistas let you know that you are just a few hundred feet above downtown Tucson while beneath the distant splendor of the Santa Catalina Mountains. The Rincon and Santa Rita mountain ranges lie off in the distance to the east and southeast. The surrounding homes add to the splendor of this mountain course. You’ll see the comfortable casitas of Starr Pass Resort, the pleasurable living of Quail Hollow, or the Luxurious homes of Tohono Ridge.

Starr Pass 009As you approach the 9th hole of the Rattler course, you will feel dwarfed beneath the majestic structure of the JW Marriott. The first through third holes of the Road Runner will provide you with a broader view of Tucson’s newest resort. The JW Marriott is ideal for large companies, organizations and corporations to come for meetings and conferences. Enjoy taking in a few rounds of golf before or after meetings. Only five minutes from downtown Tucson that is being revitalized by Rio Nuevo, you are close to evening entertainment and dining. The Starr Pass Golf Community has a lot offer all levels of homeowners.

  1. […] Though this course in on the foothills of the Tortalita Mountains it is not a target course like Starr Pass. Nor is it a course like Randolph that has very little elevation. Heritage Highlands is in between. This is a great course to enjoy for your next travel to Tucson. […]
